Secure email: Tutanota free encrypted email.
tutanota.de

Tutanota is the secure email service, built in Germany. Use encrypted emails on all devices with our open source email client, mobile apps & desktop clients.

I recently discovered Tutanota email service and it seems like a great option for people worried about privacy but I don’t know how to be sure.

Does anyone have anything to say about them?

Know about their track record?

Hi there!

As a Tutanota user, I’d say it’s a great email provider out there. Nevertheless, it’s not perfect, therefore I’d like to publish some stuff regarding Tuta.

  • Their servers run on 100% Green Energy. By using Tuta, you’re supporting their mission in being CO2-neutral and saving the environment because they’re services fully operate on renewable energy. That’s certainly a wonderful thing considering Tuta!
  • No third-party tools. Not at all. Tuta went far ahead and even developed its own reCaptcha mechanism to avoid using Google reCAPTCHA for authentication.
  • Almost OSS. Why almost? Because their backend is fully proprietary - the source code of backend is not published on their GitHub or anywhere else. I don’t know whether this is a good thing or not - Tuta is registered as a for-profit company, therefore publishing their backend could harm their bussiness. It’s up to you to decide whether proprietary-backend is a bad thing.
  • Locks you down into their own ecosystem. You cannot use Tuta with Thunderbird, not any other webmail or mail client. Only tutanota.com and Tuta apps, nothing more, nothing less.

It’s certainly up to you to decide whether you’d use Tuta or not. Nevertheless, as their customer, I am grateful to be one of thousands who use Tuta because they provide us a great service.

Another big plus in my opinion is that their Android app is in F-Droid. And they’ve made a big effort to make their app Google-free. No need for Google push notifications frameworks. https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/open-source-email-fdroid/

Yeah, to me the client lock-in was too much. I think, they do it to offer end-to-end-encryption, but it’s not like any mails I receive are encrypted to begin with or that I could send someone an encrypted mail.
